SRK Sponsors Camborne School of Mines at the International Mining Games

SRK is pleased to be sponsoring the Camborne School of Mines (CSM) team participating in the International Mining Games. For the second time in the event’s forty-year history the games will be hosted in Cornwall, United Kingdom, where they were last held in 2012. The games will take place between 29th March and 1st April 2018 at the King Edward Mine in Camborne, Cornwall.

The games were first set up in 1978 to commemorate the Sunshine Mine disaster in Idaho, USA, where a fire broke out and 91 miners lost their lives. As part of the commemoration and to preserve the traditional methods used by the miners, the games comprise of seven events from swede saw to gold panning and jackleg drilling. CSM have participated in the games since 2006 and were the first school to enter from outside North America and Australia.

Many of SRK’s consultants attended CSM which is now the only institution in the UK that offers courses in Mining Engineering. “We have been sponsoring CSM at the International Mining Games for many years now and we recognise it is important to support the next generation entering the mining industry.” Richard Oldcorn, SRK UK Managing Director.

The organisers recognise that mining is a global industry and it is important to have an occasion to get like-minded students together from around the world. “The International Mining Games, coming into its Ruby year, is an event which enables students from across the globe to meet at not only a magnificent networking event within a constantly growing community but a unique and fun, yet competitive one also.” Alex Perry, CSM International Mining Games Captain.
